Tucked away from the busy streets of Doncaster, you will find this a welcoming home for regulars and visitors alike, and if you are a snooker fan there are two full sized tables in the very spacious front room.
The chess itself is played typically in the quiet side room, or sometimes in the function room at the back, as seen in the picture taken during a match night, where two rapid games were underway whilst other players awaited their opponents return from the bar.
The bar staff are always friendly and accommodating. There is sufficient parking available and the club has wheelchair-friendly access.
We are always welcome to new players, who will be guaranteed to get placement within the squad as frequently as they're comfortable with.
If you are a keen chess player in the Doncaster area and looking for a fresh challenge, please feel free to contact the club if you have any inquiries.
Originally formed back in 1976 as Thorpe Marsh, following a few name changes, the club has been known as Dons Chess Club since 2015. They play at Bentley West End, which is approximately a mile from the city centre and their home matches and club nights are held on Wednesdays. The club has always welcomed new members regardless of their experience or ability. We are excited to welcome more new members and there has never been a better time to join us.
The Three Horseshoes is a large club who meet centrally in Doncaster (on the North Bridge). Please get in touch to find out more about this club.
Our exciting and friendly junior chess club meets on Thursday evenings (5:30 to 7:15) at Mexborough Methodist Church and Community Centre (next to Windhill Primary School). Ran by volunteers including group leader Sean McDonald (a local teacher) the club prides itself on inclusivity and positivity. Sessions involve a small social element where members can catch up with their friends, before dedicated lessons time and game time. The final 15 minutes are always used for a fun, energetic activity such as Tig to help burn off the steam of focusing and promote team camaraderie.
